I got turned onto the idea of fear-setting by Tim Ferriss, and for those unfamiliar, it’s essentially the process of defining all the reasons why you’re scared/anxious/delaying a big decision, and then you write out the ways you can mitigate those fears. I’ve found it to be really helpful, and today I discovered a major and simple improvement.
Do your fear-setting together with an expert on the topical area of your decision.
This removes your own bias from the equation and also shows you that your fears are even more unwarranted than you think. It feels good to come up with your own solutions, but it’s even more amazing to create these jointly with someone who knows the domain in which you’re struggling to make a call. Watch as the expert easily dismantles your objections and helps you get to the next level. The only cost is that you have to be willing to share the fear transparently with another person.
